Remembering days gone by, floating down the Yangzi river;
Gliding on the distant waves for a thousand miles.
Where did this pair of islands clasping flying towers come from?
Rising brilliant as gems, a crimson glow that parts the waves;
In the setting sun the mountain peaks are cast down filling the river with its shadow,
The frosty trees reach high and color half the sky purple.
The boatman pointed to where the sun was setting,
The scattered mist lit by piercing threads of light.
Of all the delightful sights I have seen none were ever so wondrous as this,
Yet loath though I was, we turned the sail into the north wind sailing onward.
To this day the traces of its wonder remain in my bosom,
Whenever I think back visiting this site my heart never fails [to be stirred];
Occasionally, my mood [dictates my brush] on the paper,
Right then, I want to swallow whole the great Yangzi River.
Fundamentally, I know my hand is not able to match my heart,
These daubs and smears are only fit for imaginative roaming while relaxing.
Several times a day I unroll this scroll by a sunny window,
Not daring to show it to others, but counting it only as personal pleasure.
Minister of Waterways and Irrigation, you are renowned for your poetry;
Suddenly you sent me fine pieces repeatedly lavishing praise [on my painting],
And casually describing how my family tradition comes from Huzhou (Wen Tong 1018-1079).
So humble and insignificant, why am I worthy of mention?
It has always been other’s colophons and evaluations that establishes one’s reputation,
How much the more [meaningful] from such a poet-historian as yourself!
Sir haven’t you noted that in the past the horse painter, General Cao (Cao Ba, active early 8th c.),
He has been immortalized, because his name is mentioned in the collected works (i.e. poems) of Du Fu?
Haven’t you also noted that Master Yan (Yan Liben, 7th c.) claimed for himself a scholarly origin,
But by the pond he suddenly experienced the embarrassment of being [called] a painter.
One’s life is inevitably filled with fortune and misfortune,
So rough and inferior, how can I compare with the ancients?
The thousand years of mountains and rivers, weighing the traces of the past,
With a laugh, why do we need to debate what is good or bad?
