DescriptionAttic red-figured krater with handles has an inverted ovoid body which tapers to a foot in two degrees. It has a short, wide neck and an overhanging mouth with an extension on either side supported by two columnar handles. The main scenes are in red figure. Subsidiary ornament is black on reserved ground. The upper side of the mouth is decorated with a lotus-bud chain. There is a palmette on each extension. The side of the rim on front and back is decorated with a stylized band of ivy. The neck on side A is decorated with pendant lotus-bud chain in reserved panel. The neck on side B is completely glazed. The shoulder on either side is decorated with a row of pendant tongues. The handles and sides of the extensions are completely glazed. The main scene on Side A represents Helios (identified by a sun disc on his head) riding in a biga drawn by winged horses to the right. A dolphin beneath the horses dives into waves indicated in added red. On Side B is a youth wearing a himation standing facing left. A nude youth is on either side. The scenes on both sides are framed to the left and right by vertical bands of ivy. The foot is glazed with the lower edge reserved; rays above.
