DescriptionTwo milliners sit at a dramatically angled table, their bodies partially obscured by three hat stands that punctuate their cramped workspace. One woman actively works on a hat, while the other has been interrupted. She appears lost in thought, gazing outside the pictorial space with an anxious expression. The broadly described figure on the right appears to be more an animated shadow than a substantial individual. She is silhouetted against the wall, a complex surface composed of mottled blues and whites. Her counterpart is framed, and partially obstructed, by two hat stands. Colorful ribbons in startling, saturated shades of yellow, orange, pink, and green litter the table in front of the women. On View
