DescriptionThe broad Moscow river counterbalances the expansive sky in this photograph taken from the Crimea Bridge in Moscow, looking towards many a construction crane, and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. This is the second Christ the Savior cathedral, in fact. The first was destroyed after the Russian Revolution, and was long time the site of a large, outdoor municipal swimming pool, whose footprint was the foundation of the original cathedral. The replica cathedral, started after the fall of the Soviet Union, is 3/4 the size of its predecessor. Dominating the narrow land plane on the right is a giant sculture dedicated to Peter the Great. Actually, it was originally dedicated to Christopher Columbus, as a propsed gift to the United States. Only when the US refused did it change to a Russian figure and built for placement in Moscow. Most Muskovites hate it. Dynamite has in fact been found around the base more than once.
