Lake Forest Mound

Site#YYC-7604
DescriptionThe "Lake Forest" source of archaeological chert in the Jefferson National Forest in central Virginia has just been systematically sampled and analyzed this year (1997). Previous chemical analyses by Johnson and Friendland (1987) and others have generally been based on grab samples from the southern Lake Louise area. Systematic survey and sampling this summer resulted in the discovery of another source to the southwest. The chemistry differs in a number of incompatibles, but appears to be derived from the same source. A complete major, minor, and trace analysis has been completed using the new Philips PW2400 WXRF and will be published in Janos (1998). HistoryLand previously owned by Burgess family, part of a bequest to the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1785.Legal NotesAll research findings to be filed with state archives.Location InfoSurvey permissions handled through Virginia Department of Forestry.
