DescriptionChrist, center, carrying the cross, looks back over His shoulder at Mary who reaches out to Him. Two other figures stand next to her. Mounted Roman soldiers enter the area through an arch, while another soldier ties a rope around Christ's hands on the cross. At the left, a mounted soldier carrying a banner and a hill in the background frame the action of the foreground figures. The soldiers' shields bear the inscription, SPQR.
