In 1890 Reid began using brigher colors in his palette. He favored painting women, particularly outdoors and with flowers. This painting is therefore unusual.
Robert Reid was born in Masschusetts and was one of the "Ten American Painters". Reid first studied in Boston at the school of Museum of Fine Arts and he later attended the Art Students League in New York City.
